A Recipe for Success: How Fresh Del Monte Is Tackling Food Waste with a New Education Program

Challenge

Fresh Del Monte is driven by a strong belief in environmental stewardship and continuous progress. The company has pledged to reduce food loss and organic waste sent to landfill by 50% by 2030, a goal embedded within its broader 2030 sustainability targets.

With these ambitious internal goals as its foundation, Fresh Del Monte views food waste education not as a compliance requirement but as a vital opportunity to align operations with its sustainability vision. Empowering frontline employees with the right tools and insights is a natural next step in translating organizational goals into measurable, meaningful impact.

Solutions Delivered

To test a targeted training solution, Fresh Del Monte partnered with TripleWin Advisory to pilot Mitigate, a four-module course designed to deliver targeted education on FLW and provide actionable and practical mitigation strategies to deploy, tailored to different roles across the food value chain.

The course was delivered over a four-week period to 25 Fresh Del Monte supervisors and managers, with content covering the following topics:

  • An Introduction & Overview of  FLW within Manufacturing
  • The Problem of & Solutions to FLW in Manufacturing
  • Tackling Food Waste at Home
  • How to Take Systemic Action at Scale

Mitigate
combines real-world examples, expert insights, and interactive elements such as card-sorting activities and case studies to make the content sector-specific and immediately actionable. The pilot was facilitated by TripleWin’s education team, with modules tailored for relevance to the manufacturing environment.

Project Learnings

Participants responded positively to Mitigate. Many shared that the FLW training helped connect the dots between their daily tasks and larger system-level waste issues—both inside and outside the workplace. The most compelling lessons included the scale of global food waste, the environmental impact of discarded food, and how even small changes at the individual level could ripple into broader benefits.

Notable takeaways:

  • 100% of participants who completed the full course said they would recommend it as formal training for employees.
  • Respondents appreciated the sector-specific Manufacturing module especially because it featured real Fresh Del Monte employee perspectives and context-specific strategies.
  • The “FLW Strategy Prioritization” tool helped workers think about solutions such as by-product utilization, waste tracking, and optimizing sorting protocols.
  • Several employees said the course influenced their habits at home, including making pledges to start composting and smarter grocery shopping.

Client Outcomes

Fresh Del Monte sees Mitigate as a valuable tool for scaling food waste awareness and action internally. The pilot revealed a strong appetite among employees to learn more about sustainability and to align daily operations with broader organizational goals, such as emissions reduction and waste diversion.

The company is exploring ways to integrate Mitigate into required training for operations and warehouse employees, while implementing the “Taking Action at Scale” module for managerial roles. With modules that are 15 minutes long, accessible in both Spanish & English languages, and optimized for mobile devices, Fresh Del Monte is well-positioned to expand training access across its North American sites.

As one participant noted, “Every small action can make a difference.” For Fresh Del Monte, Mitigate is helping turn those actions into measurable progress.
